Preventative

At North Shore Family Dental, we offer a variety of services geared toward keeping your teeth in the best shape possible.  Here are a few of the services we provide to help you with that goal.

Digital X-Ray

Professional Cleaning: It is recommended you get a professional cleaning at least every six months. A hygienist will clean and polish your teeth, exploring all surfaces of every tooth. If x-rays are needed, the hygienist will take full-mouth x-rays or bitewings (molars and pre-molars). In some cases, a panoramic x-ray is taken with bite wings. Typically, bite wing x-rays are taken at least once every year, and full-mouth or panoramic x-rays are taken every three years. North Shore Family Dental now offers digital x-ray technology, in which a small sensor sends pictures to a computer where they can be recorded and saved. This technology reduces radiation exposure to the patient and allows for almost instantaneous imaging for the dentist.

Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling and root plapning is a form of treatment for periodontal (gum) disease.  It is a deep cleaning of the teeth below the gum line.  During this procedure, calculus (hardened plaque) is removed from the tooth.  Root planing removes any remaining calculus and smoothes the irregular areas of the root surface.

Periodontal Maintenance: After completing scaling and root planing, patients will be put on a periodontal maintenance program—being seen by their dentist every three to four months—until they have normal pocketing.

Intraoral Camera

Oral Exam: If you are a new patient, your dentist will perform a comprehensive dental exam, giving you an extensive evaluation of your oral health. For returning patients, your dentist will conduct a periodic oral exam, looking for any changes in your dental and health status since your previous visit. A comprehensive exam will be done every three years. After assessing your oral health, your dentist will develop a customized treatment plan that best fits your needs.

Sealants: Dental sealants (or tooth sealants) prevent the likelihood of tooth decay (cavities) forming on your teeth. Your dentist will use a resin to bond into the grooves of your teeth to form a smoother tooth surface, allowing dental plaque to be removed more easily. Being able to remove dental plaque more effectively should lower your chances of getting a cavity.
